The Fifth Research Meeting in Theory of History and History of Historiography (EPETHH) took place in Goiânia, Brazil, from November 12 to 14, 2025. Held biennially, the 2025 event was organized by Fórum de Teoria da História da Universidade Federal de Goiás (UFG), with support from Sociedade Brasileira de Teoria e História da Historiografia (SBTHH). Its fifth edition centered on “Práticas de historicização: desafios éticos e profissionais,” which guided reflections on the foundations, limits, and possibilities of contemporary practices of historicization. In this context, recent debates have emphasized practical, ethical, and political questions, focusing on professional responsibilities in the face of phenomena such as denialism, memory disputes, the climate emergency, and new regimes of knowledge production mediated by digital technologies.

The program included activities spanning and connecting different levels and dimensions of academic research. The opening lecture, “History Beyond the Human: Ethics, Epistemic Justice, and Critical Hope,” was delivered by historian Ewa Domańska, while the closing lecture featured Verónica Tozzi Thompson’s presentation “Confianza y verdad. El rol del testimonio para la construcción comunitaria del conocimiento histórico.” The Thematic Panels provided another forum for discussing issues raised by the central theme, including professional careers in Theory of History, current challenges facing the humanities in Latin America, and journal publishing in the field of Theory of History.

EPETHH also organized seven Thematic Symposium rooms addressing theory of history, history of historiography, and history education. Sessions held across the event’s three days enabled undergraduate research students and master’s, doctoral, and postdoctoral researchers, with completed or ongoing projects, to discuss their hypotheses and findings. The event also featured a book launch session, short courses, and research-project workshops, an activity that has become a distinctive feature of EPETHH by giving students and researchers the opportunity to receive qualified feedback on their projects.

The fifth edition of the Research Meeting in Theory of History and History of Historiography underscores the importance of supranational engagement and exchange among historians, as well as the need to continually reassess the profession and its practices in light of contemporary global and interdisciplinary demands.
