Biography:

Historian and PhD in Philosophy, with a focus on Aesthetics and Art Theory (Universidade do Chile). Since its inception, he has been part of the editorial team for the cultural journal Papel Máquina. With Antonio Gramsci, Artes del retrato won the National Prize for Unpublished Essays in 2020, awarded by the Chilean Ministry of Culture, Arts and Heritage. He is co-director of the Postmodern Historiography collection at Editorial Palinodia, which has published Spanish-language works by authors such as Frank Ankersmit, Carlo Ginzburg, Kalle Pihlainen, Ethan Kleinberg, Werner Hamacher, and Sergio Rojas.

Reflecting on the always impossible task of self-presentation, I would say that initially, the feeling of confinement within the historical discipline led me to focus on problems initially placed outside the boundaries of my area of formation. Paradoxically, these same concerns eventually brought me back to historiographic practice, its epistemological presuppositions, and their effects on writing, as well as their conditions of possibility. One of my earliest publications examines precisely the emergence of New Chilean History, that is, the set of conditions from which a practice of historical writing emerges, a historiographic order of representation. The problem of historical representation, initially obliterated in Chilean historiography and strongly raised in debates and practices of criticism and visual arts in the 1980s, initially attracted my attention to purely aesthetic questions and subsequently opened up a general discussion about images and their connection with historical narratives.

My areas of work focus on the epistemology of history, philosophy of history, intellectual history, and image theory.

Currently, I am a member of Grupo de Pesquisa Niilismo e Antropoceno, sponsored by Centro Melbern Glasscock de Pesquisa em Humanidades da Universidade Texas A&M, EUA. the Rede Internacional for the Study of Vision, based in Universidade Autônoma do México; and the Rede Euro-Americana de Estética Contemporânea (REEC), a network hosted by Instituto de Estética da UC and the Department of Philosophy and Sociedade da Universidade Complutense de Madri.
